MRI service for Animal Research

CSIC core equipment currently includes one dedicated animal MRI scanner to support investigator small animal research needs. CSIC's Bruker 9.4T MRI scanner is located in CSIC's facility in Whitehead Biomedical Research Building. CSIC's newest animal MRI, a Bruker 11.7T MRI scanner, will be located in CSIC's facility in Health Sciences Research Building II (currently off-line and anticipated to be available in fall 2024). CSIC's Siemens 3T PrismaFIT MRI scanner in Health Sciences Research Building II facility is available to support some sedated large animal research scans (requires special coordination and approval).

Our MRI service for animal research supports animal sedation, monitoring, and recovery. In some cases, investigators who receive training and are approved to operate the scanner without a technician present will be allowed to utilize scanner for after-hours, overnight, and weekend/holiday scans on both live animal and fixed tissues.

The 9.4T facility is located in the DAR rodent care facility in the Whitehead Research Building, for convenient animal transfer and care. The 11.7T facility will be located on the G2-level of Health Sciences Research Building II, near the DAR facility in HSRB-II. Investigators are required to coordinate with DAR staff to assure compliance with DAR policies for animal use and transfer processes for each facility.
