ICMC Biorepository
The ICMC biorepository contains over 15,000 clinically important pathogens isolated from patient specimens (such as blood, urine, respiratory, and stool) collected as part of routine patient care and are available to investigators. The ICMC biorepository can help investigators access and store clinical isolates and specimens for future studies.
Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing
The ICML has the capacity to perform detailed classification of antibiotic resistant clinical isolates.
Heteroresistance Determination
Antibiotic heteroresistance is a phenotype in which a bacterial isolate contains subpopulations of cells that show a substantial reduction in antibiotic susceptibility compared with the main population. Recent work indicates that heteroresistance is very common for several different bacterial species and antibiotic classes.
Genomic Characterization and Analysis
The ICMC can perform whole genome sequencing and comprehensive profiling to determine relatedness between isolates, detect virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes, and taxonomic identification.

The ICMC is supported by the Department of Medicine and the Division of Infectious Diseases. We provide investigators access to isolates through prospective biobanking of clinical samples and perform customized testing of clinical isolates, environmental samples, and microbiome samples. This includes but not limited to, sophisticated susceptibility testing procedures not routinely available in clinical laboratories, studies of synergies between combinations of antibiotics, techniques to identify heteroresistance (looking for subpopulations with resistance), qPCR, and whole genomic sequencing and analysis.
