About DAR

Who is DAR?

The Division of Animal Resources (DAR) is an integrated team of animal care specialists, administrative professionals, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, logistics deliverers, and information technology experts dedicated to the high quality and comprehensive care of research animals and to our mission of providing for the health and wellbeing everywhere by providing the finest support possible to Emory University scientists.

Foremost, through our comprehensive services and management and oversight of our animal research facilities, we constitute the foundation for good science through our standardization and control of the environment where animals reside, experiments are conducted, data is generated, and results are recorded. The DAR prides itself as an organization that embraces change and new technology, but at our core realizes that people are the essential source of quality and productivity in our operation and in research. Combining talented and dedicated people with technological advances has enabled a tradition of delivering quality and cost-saving performance. These allow our scientific team mates to devote greater resources toward generating new knowledge and to the cures and better understanding of disease that we so fervently support and desire for ourselves, for our families, for our friends, and for the world beyond.

Mission & History of DAR

The Mission Statement of the Emory University Division of Animal Resources is "To promote the health and wellbeing of people everywhere by providing the finest animal care and support for Emory University Scientists." The history of a School of Medicine organizational entity involved in the acquisition and care of research animals can be traced through financial records to 1966. Ten years later, this organization was formally organized under the leadership of the newly-hired University Veterinarian for the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Morton S. Silberman, DVM.
