Water Management for Aquatic Species

Provision

The water provided to DAR-managed aquatic species is drawn from taps in the housing facility. Water is stored in bins for a minimum of 24 hours while air is bubbled through to remove chlorine. It is then used to replenish the water in housing tanks during regularly scheduled water change out or when water quality testing results mandate. Special salts and buffers may be added upon request by investigators.

Quality Assurance

DAR animal care staff collect water samples from housing units once per month for water quality testing. Testing frequency is increased if deemed necessary by the veterinary staff. A standard battery of tests is run in the DAR diagnostic lab, and include the following: pH, general hardness, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and chlorine levels. All results of testing are available by contacting the DAR Diagnostic Lab at 404.712.2040.
