Agent: Herpesvirus Types I & II (Herpes Simplex Virus I & II; HSV)
Herpes Simplex viruses are common human pathogens causing “cold sores” and venereal disease. People acquire the infection from other humans. Once acquired, infection is persistent. Laboratory-associated infection in humans is rare.
Potential Hazard: Virus may be present in tissues or fluids from infected animals. Infection may be transmitted by ingestion, needle stick, inhalation of aerosolized materials or droplet contamination of eyes, mouth or nose.
Recommended Precautions: The animal biosafety level II practices (DAR SOP 400-3) will protect husbandry personnel against exposure or infection. Vaccines are not available for use in humans.
