Agent: Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus; GAS)

Group A streptococci are bacteria that can cause “strep throat,” rheumatic fever, “toxic shock-like syndrome” and necrotizing, or “flesh eating,” infections.

Potential Hazard: Group A streptococci infection may be acquired through wounds or mucous membrane exposurecand may be facilitated by pre-existing viral infection such as influenza or varicella. Any number of symptoms may accompany infection: muscle pain, respiratory distress, abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, neurologic signs or soft tissue infection including the presence of blisters.

Recommended Precautions: The animal biosafety level II practices (DAR SOP 400-3) will protect husbandry personnel against exposure or infection. Vaccines are not available for use in humans.
